Assassin’s Creed Mirage won’t have ‘extended’ DLC or post-launch content, creative director confirms

We already knew that Assassin’s Creed Mirage would return to the more intimate and focused scope of older games in Ubisoft’s sneaky, sneaky series. It looks like this restrained approach will extend to its post-launch content as well, with its developers saying they currently have no plans to expand the game after release with DLC or other expansions.

Confirmation came from creative director Stéphane Boudon during a Reddit AMA, confirming, “At this time, Mirage does not have an extended DLC or post-launch plan.”

That’s a pretty significant departure from the approach taken with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which was still expanding with major expansions several years after its 2020 release, with last year’s Dawn of Ragnarök marking the third and final big chunk of story content. In addition to its three major expansions, Valhalla has also had multiple seasons, including new events, game modes, weapons and gear, cosmetics, and more. Its latest content update released earlier this year, establishing its connection to Mirage.

It looks like Mirage will have none of that, keeping the focus on what Ubisoft has described from the start as a much smaller, story-driven game by design. Part of that is no doubt due to how Mirage grew out of planned DLC for Valhalla, exploring the Basim character introduced in the Viking-themed installment, before it became a larger standalone game.

“We decided to make Mirage a full game in the following weeks after we started working on it,” Narrative Director Sarah Beaulieu answered another question during the AMA. “The opportunity to work on the city of Baghdad and the character of Basim was too good to pass up!”

Boudon also dives into some more technical aspects of Mirage, mentioning that quicksave will be more “accessible” than previous Assassin’s Creed games and confirming that, despite the game returning to the ACs of yesteryear, the back and side ejects from previous games – which allowed players to climb away from walls – will not be returning to Mirage.

“For Parkour, we focus on fluidity and control and build our own thing, drawing inspiration from multiple ACs,” Boudon said. “Rear and side ejections like in pre-AC3 games are not part of our Parkour system, but we have put a lot of effort into working on small details to make sure players have the best control over Basim. We are still tweaking Parkour to further reinforce that control and feeling of fluidity and agility when traversing Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Beaulieu teased that Mirage’s story would provide the answer to another question posed by Valhalla: why Basim doesn’t have an eagle companion, like other assassins.
